Covid-19 – Difficulty meeting HMRC Filing and Payment Deadlines

Covid-19 is presenting many problems for businesses whether it be in relation to reduced footfall, cancelled orders, delays in payments, staff unavailability amongst others. Maybe you have been fortunate that you have been able to continue as normal for the present, but you want to put a contingency plan in place.

For those businesses who are struggling to keep up with their creditors due to coronavirus and are concerned about paying your taxes on time, you can call HMRC’s special purpose helpline set up to assist businesses directly affected by coronavirus.

HMRC will offer assistance based on the business’ past compliance history and your specific circumstances. Some measures they are offering are;

  • instalment arrangements,
  • suspending debt collection proceedings,
  • cancelling penalties and interest for late payment.

You should contact HMRC as soon as you become aware of a potential issue on their dedicated helpline 0800 0159 559. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, and Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Likewise, if you are unable to submit your VAT, PAYE and/or CIS returns on time due to your bookkeeper having to self-isolate, you should contact the special purpose HMRC Helpline to explain your circumstances. We recommend you do not wait until after the missed deadline but be proactive and make sure HMRC know ahead of time.

Latest guidance and support

With Government advice being updated daily, we will be keeping this dedicated Business Support Centre and our social media channels refreshed as and when relevant. Our dedicated teams are monitoring the situation closely, but if you are having difficulties getting relaxed measures agreed with HMRC please do not hesitate to contact our Team and we can try to assist arranging alternative finance arrangements or assist with filings in the short-term.
